What is Google dork query ?

A Google dork query, sometimes just referred to as a dork, is a search string that uses advanced search operators to find information that is not readily available on a website.

Google dorking, also known as Google hacking, can return information that is difficult to locate through simple search queries. That description includes information that is not intended for public viewing but that has not been adequately protected.

As a passive attack method, Google dorking can return usernames and passwords, email lists, sensitive documents, personally identifiable financial information (PIFI) and website vulnerabilities. That information can be used for any number of illegal activities, including cyberterrorism, industrial espionage, identity theft andcyberstalking.

Antivirus License Files

The objective of this Google Hacking Series would be to fetch the insecurely stored license files over random web servers. Few days back I downloaded a copy an Antivirus and registered with the default license file provided with it, but after every update I started receiving “Product NOT genuine notifications”. So I decided to find myself a private license file. Of course, Google would do it for me. I opened up a default license file and looked for unique lines in it, which nowhere else should appear in any writing. After a quick search I found the following lines: “Thank you for your purchase/trial of ALWIL Software products.” Another Google Dork was ready which went as :

intext:”Thank you for your purchase/trial of ALWIL Software products.:”

filetype:avastlic

This dork would simply list down results which link to pages which have the lines “Thank you for your purchase/trial of ALWIL Software products.” in them. As soon as I submitted the query:

127 results out of which, at least 100 are valid-upto-2015 licenses, even for professional editions for Avast appeared. The results also provide full contact information of the name, address and company of the license holder. A major edition to this dork would be if we add filetype:”avastlic” to it, because Avast provides its licenses in Avastlic format.
